A conversation about the work behind the work
Bold Journey Magazine recently published a profile of Matt O'Neil, the multi-platinum engineer behind Lunar Mansion Studios in West Houston. This is our summary, not a reproduction. Read the full interview at Bold Journey.
The theme: technical skill matters most when it helps an artist say something clearly. That idea shapes how we approach recording, production, mixing, and mastering.
Start with the song, not the settings
Every session begins with the music: rhythm, melody, harmony, and feeling. Gear, arrangement, and mix choices come after, in service of that direction, so the song stays at the center.
Musicianship and technical fluency work together
Musical experience helps Matt hear how a performance sits inside an arrangement. Technical fluency lets him adapt when a session changes course. Together they keep sessions fast and focused on what the listener will hear.
Trust gives artists room to take risks
Good collaboration protects the artist's point of view. Clear communication, solid preparation, and a calm response to change let artists take creative risks. The record comes out more intentional and still sounds like them.
